Chrystia Freeland is a prominent figure in Canadian politics, currently serving as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. Born in Peace River, Alberta in 1968, she grew up in a politically active family. Her father was a lawyer and member of the Alberta legislature, while her mother was a prominent activist for women’s rights. With such influences early on, it is no surprise that Freeland developed an interest in politics and social justice at a young age.
After obtaining a degree in Russian history and literature from Harvard University, Freeland began her career as a journalist, reporting on economic and political issues for various publications. In 1996, she took on the role of Moscow bureau chief for The Financial Times, gaining insight into the political landscape of Russia and its relations with the rest of the world.
In 2013, Freeland made the leap from journalism to politics, running as a Liberal Party candidate in the Toronto Centre by-election. She was subsequently elected to the House of Commons in the 2015 federal election and was appointed to various cabinet roles before being named Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance in 2019.
Freeland has been recognized for her strong leadership and progressive policies, particularly in the areas of economic and social policy. She has also been a vocal advocate for women’s rights
